Looking Back: What Happened?
When we received the dry ice we immediately put it into a beaker and then filled it with water. We were so excited to watch the water turn the piece of dry ice into a gas that we weren't really thinking about the science behind it., we just wanted to play with the fog it released. My group mate had put his over the beaker covering the hole and he discovered that he could feel all of the pressure building up which we prompted us to all try it. Once our fog started to tone down a little we put hot water into it and then inserted food coloring which made it look super cool.
Looking Beyond: What do you think has happened? What's The Science?
When we were first handed the dry ice we started to break it into pieces to put into our beakers. But we realized that we had left it sitting there for longer than we had thought because there was a spot of white on the table where the dry ice had been sitting. After we had the bigger pieces of dry ice in our beakers we noticed we had smaller pieces on the table and we decided to mess with those. My group mate and I were sliding it across the table as gas was still forming off it. We soon discovered that the gas coming off it was because the dry ice was hitting the air and was starting to warm up.
Looking Inward: Humans Doing Science - Lab Practice
Did my group really learn anything besides how fun dry ice is to play with? I don't really think so. We were too busy seeing how pretty the food coloring looked in the beaker to focus on the science aspect of it. Yes did mess with it to see how different things would affect it but we strayed away from what the main purpose was.
Looking Outward: Collaboration and Impact
I worked with Nick, Handy, Brandon and Andres. I felt like our group didn't really focus on the science as much as we should've but we did mess around with it. We just wanted to see the fog instead of focusing on why the dry ice reacts the way it does. My group mate took over the experiment so all I really could do was watch which was a very big disappointment to me.
Looking Forward: What Next?
For the next experiment we do I really want to be more involved. This experiment while cool was a bit of a bummer because I couldn't try anything out on my own. I just sat back and watched others play with it which resulted in me not learning as much as I could've. I really enjoyed seeing the food coloring mix with the dry ice and water because seeing the fog be a slightly different color was pretty interesting.
Take Aways
The biggest thing I'm taking away from this experiment is to be more hands on with my learning. I tend to learn best when I can visually and physically work with it. I find it to be the most beneficial way for me to comprehend things.
